IplantostudyforPh.D.inBiochemistryatCaseWesternReserveUniversitywithspecialinterestsinmetabolism,macromolecularsynthesis,andproteincrystalgrowth.Ihavehadplentifulpreparations.First,whenbeinganundergraduateintheDepartmentofChemicalEngineeringatTsinghuaUniversity,Igotveryextensiveandintensiveeducation.Itookmanycoursesonchemistryandtherelatedsubjects,andearnedhighscoresformostofthem.Second,mymajor,Polymer,canbeputintogooduseinBiochemistryprogramsbecausePolymeriscloselyrelatedwithbiologicalMacromolecule.Third,Ihaveworkingexperiencethatenrichesmytheoryandlaboratoryskills.

From1990tonow,IhavebeenengagedasanAssistantEngineerbytheResearchinstitute,BeijingYanshanPetrochemicalCorporation(RIBYPC).Inthefirstyear,Iwasinchargeofa5-litrereactorforpolymerizationofCarboxylatedButadiene-StyeneLatex.ThenIwastransferredtoanotherresearchgrouptosynthesizePET/PHBcopolymer,akinofpolyester,whichhasthepropertyofLiquidCrystal.Iamtheassistantheadofthegroup.Wecanpreparethenovelpolymerwithhighmoleculeweightandexcellentpropertyina2-litrestainlesssteelreactor.Duringthismonomers,withpurityofmorethan99.99%;thismademyleaderverysatisfied.

Knowingwhereisheadingduringnavigationbringsassuredhappiness.AsastudentmajoringinBiochemistry,Ibeganmyodysseyfiveyearsago,whenourclasshadanewbiologyteacher,whowasyoungandenergetic.Hetaughtusinanentertainingwayandcommunicatedwithusquitewell.IlikedhimverymuchandwasimpressedbytheknowledgeofBiologicalSciences.HeopenednewdoorstotherealmofBiologyinmylife.Andwithtimebeing,Ifeelmoreandmoresureaboutmydestination.Althoughthetrailofnavigationhasnotalwaysbeendefinitelystraight,Ibelieveitleadsmetomydream.

BecauseofmyexcellentperformanceintheNationalOlympicMathematicsContestofHighSchoolStudentsin1994andmyoutstandingacademicrecordinseniorhighschool,IhadtheopportunitytobeadmittedtoPekingUniversityorTsinghuaUniversity,twomostselectiveuniversitiesinChina,waivedoftheAdmissionExamination.ButifItookthechance,Icouldn’tselectbiologicalsciencesasmymajor.SoIgaveupthepreciouschanceandtooktheAdmissionExamination.IsucceededandwasadmittedbytheDepartmentofBiochemistryandMolecularBiologyinPekingUniversity,whichranksfirstinbiologicalscienceeducationandresearchinChinaandhasraisedmanyscholarsincludingmembersofChineseAcademyofSciences.Inthefirstthreeyearsinuniversity,mycurriculumhasabroadrange,coveringbothnaturalandhumanitysciences,aswellasputtingemphasisnotonlyonbiologicalsciencesbutalsooncloselyrelatedcourses.Ihavededicatedmyenergytomystudyandhavereceivedacomplete,profoundandstricttraininginbiologicalscienceswiththecombinedstrengthofindividualandprofessors'help.Playingbasketballisalsoasolidpartofmycampuslife.IamanactivememberinthebasketballteamoftheCollegeofLifeSciencesinPekingUniversity.Asapointguard,theorganizeroftheteam'sattack,Ihavelearnedtomakethefiveplayerstobeastronggroupinagame.Lastyear,werankedthethirdinPekingUniversityCupamongthethirty-sixteams.Thisexperienceendowsmeastrongsenseofresponsibility,confidenceandteam-workingspirit.
