Yet,thedreamhasalreadybecameanightmare,thatinthemoney-orienting,power-persuingmindsspringingupsincetheIndustryRevolution,Americanshavefallenin,notonlythewayoflifethroughwhichAmericansriflingformoreluxuriousenjoyment,butthemoralityofheartthattheypersuedprosperitywithallcostsofwhichtheywereoblivious.

Luckly,wehadpeoplewhosawtherealitymuchmoreclearlythantheblindmasses,whilethosewereconsideredCriticsofsorts.Theypointedoutthatmanyversionsofthedreamequateprosperitywithhappiness,andthathappinessmaynotalwaysbethatsimple.ThesecriticssuggestthattheAmericanDreammayalwaysremaintantalizinglyoutofreachforsomeAmericans,makingitmorelikeacrueljokethanagenuinedream.FitzgeraldwasoneofthemwhowentthefirststepthatAmericanfictionhastakensinceHenryJames,becausehedepictedtheextolledgrandestandmostboisterous,recklessandmerry-makingscene（T.S.Elliot）。
